Overview
OpenMDict (“the App”) is a free, open-source MDict (.mdx/.mdd) dictionary reader for iPhone and iPad. Your privacy is important to us, and we want to be transparent: this App collects virtually no data.
Data Collection
We do not collect, store, or transmit any personal information.
The App operates entirely on your device. Your dictionaries, bookmarks, lookup history, and preferences are stored locally and never leave your device unless you opt in to iCloud sync.
Network Usage
The App makes network requests in only two scenarios:
- Preset dictionary downloads — When you choose to download from our curated selection of open-source dictionaries, these are delivered via Apple’s On-Demand Resources (ODR) from Apple’s CDN. These requests are standard HTTPS requests and do not include any personal identifiers.
- iCloud sync — If you opt in during the initial setup, your data is synced via Apple’s native CloudKit infrastructure (see “Data Storage” below). No data is sent to any server operated by the developer.
No analytics, tracking, or telemetry data is collected or transmitted.
Third-Party Services
The App does not integrate with any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services.
Data Storage
Dictionary files, bookmarks, lookup history, lookup counts, and dictionary group configurations are stored locally on your device.
If you choose to enable iCloud sync, this data is synced across your devices using Apple’s iCloud service (CloudKit). This means:
- Apple manages the iCloud sync service and infrastructure.
- The developer cannot see, access, or retrieve any of your data.
- Only you can access this data through your iCloud account.
- You can delete this data by removing the App or managing your iCloud storage.
- You can also choose “Use Offline” during setup to keep everything local with no sync.
This data is also included in your device backups and can be deleted by uninstalling the App.
Children’s Privacy
The App does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
